Renal Scan technique, use and value

In this article, we are going to discuss Renal (kidney) Scan (scintigraphy) regarding its idea (technique) and diagnostic values .
Technique
- Radioisotope I.V. ===> uptake ===> concentration ===> excretion .
Renal-Scan

Value of renal scan (scintigraphy)

1- Dynamic scintigraphy
 By Technitium-labeled Diethylene Triamine Penta Acetic acid (Tc-DTPA) or hippuran :

• Renal blood flow, to diagnose cases of renal artery stenosis.
• Urinary tract obstruction.
• Bladder emptying (residual urine).
• Measurement of GFR.

2- Static scintigraphy (DMSA scan) i.e DiMercaptoSuccinic Acid :
• Relative split kidney function, the function is divided between both kidneys with a range of 45-55%.
• Kidney visualization e.g. in identifying ectopic kidney.
• Localization of infection using gallium or isotopically labeled leucocytes may be of value to localize an infection e.g. renal abscess.
